A Sweet Friendship

It was a busy time during the work day for one of my favorite people when I walked in to share something with her. She stopped what she was doing, turned toward me, folded her hands on her desk and gave me her full attention. It struck me how this made me feel; valued, loved, respected, and that my words were important to her. It was a slight gesture that weighed a ton in my soul. Now that’s a good friend.

I instantly thought of all the times I was guilty of continuing my busyness when others came to talk to me and realized that she was the kind of friend I wanted to be.

Another special person in my life showed me the importance of balancing the conversation by asking them about his/her life. If you pay attention to conversations you have with others, most of the time, they are one sided.

What Makes a Good Friend?

In thinking about relationships lately, I reflected on what makes a good friend. A few suggestions might include:

  • Make time with them a priority. Life is so busy, which hinders quality time with the people we love. Schedule time for them. It won’t just happen.
  • Be careful not to monopolize the conversations. Show interest in them.
  • Be a good listener. Listen to understand, not to plan your next response. Check your body language. Are you communicating your interest? Try turning toward them, hands still, and eyes on their face.
  • Ask them how you can pray for them and then diligently do so. Later, check in to get an update.
  • Do kind things for them. It shows you are thinking about them.
  • Give your time sacrificially when she needs you. In the event of a difficult life event, prepare a meal or seek a way you can support her.

How Do You Rate?

Based on these characteristics, how would you rate yourself as a friend? I certainly have some growing to do. Let’s commit to doing just that, out of love, not guilt. I feel so loved by Jesus when someone loves me well, and I want to love those God has given me.

Jesus, thank you for showing us how to love others sacrificially. Help us love like You do.

  1. As always, Johna, another beautiful blog. You are definitely the type of friend that you talked about here. You listen to what I have to say and you care deeply for others. I just miss you being here, but know that you are on an exciting adventure with Clay. Love you dearly, BG
