Have you ever taken on a project that felt impossible? You don’t know where to start. It feels overwhelming. There are too many steps in the process. Certain things have to happen that are out of your control in order to accomplish it.
I feel that way right now. I feel inadequate without the necessary knowledge, resources, and patience to see this project through.
Recognize How Little We Have to Give
In the Gospels, at the end of a day of teaching and healing, the disciples asked Jesus to send the people away to get food and lodging in nearby villages. Jesus challenged them by commanding them to feed the 5000 men plus the women and children.
The disciples wondered where they would ever find enough. Phillip stressed over how much money it would cost to feed a crowd this size (John 6:7). Andrew found a boy that had five loaves of bread and two fish, but questioned what so little could do to satisfy so many (John 6:8).
Jesus Adds to What We Give
Jesus told the disciples to seat the people in groups. He took the bread and fish, thanked God for what they had, and then distributed them to every person, who ate until they were satisfied (John 6:11). Jesus miraculously multiplied it so that there were 12 full baskets gathered after everyone had what they wanted.
Thankful for the Not Enough
What struck me, as I studied this, was that Jesus thanked God for what He knew would not be enough.
Whoa! Wait – what? Read that again and let it sink in.
When was the last time we thanked Jesus for what we knew was not enough? When we do, it creates the perfect setting for Him to do amazing things in our lives, and it sets us up in the perfect position to see it when He does. This is called faith.
Putting It Into Practice
In regards to my seemingly overwhelming project, I have focused on the huge mountain and my insufficiency. This has resulted in my task growing even bigger and more ominous in my mind.
When we focus on fear, it makes the situation seem worse, but a focus on faith in God’s ability brings peace and strength.
Jesus Will Add to What I Have to Give
I need to bring Him what I have (my limited knowledge and my ability to ask lots of questions) and thank Him for it. Then, I need to trust Jesus, who is in control, has a plan, and has promised to do the impossible.
Lord, thank you that we do not have to navigate this life without the hope you bring to our Not Enough. Help us to thank you in these circumstances, trust you to fill the gaps, and give us the eyes to see it when you do. In Jesus’ Name. Amen
Be Blessed,
Johna
